Food & Drink: Staple & Fancy Mercantile

What to do on a Seattle summer weekend night? Check out the new Staple & Fancy Mercantile in Ballard.
Located in the Kolstran Building on Ballard Ave and next to the other newly opened The Walrus and The Carpenter, Ethan Stowell’s 5th creation had its “soft opening” on Friday August 13th.
Serving beet salad, sweet corn ravioli, gnocchi and mainstays like fish, chicken and beef (but with the Ethan Stowell NW flair) AND! if you like a surprise and are extremely hungry, Staple & Fancy offers a $45 tasting menu – where the customer alerts the waiter of their dislikes, but the rest of the courses are driven by the chef (sensing a trend in dining here???)
After 4 hours of dining and drinking (forgot to mention the best thing about this place – the wine list (the best of every region) we walked out full. The atmosphere far outshined the menu, but lets give them a break -it IS only the soft opening.
S&FM if you are reading this, dont try so hard! Beet salad is good as is. You dont have to add radish, watercress, avo and egg…
But who am I? Not a food critic, but someone who likes to eat.
Ive also learned from watching countless Top Chef episodes – dont over think the food.
Tom Collichio would say “pack up your knives”…..
