Julia Childs - upon her return from France and Germany, adjusting from her ex-pat lifestyle convincing others in America in the 1960's that wine drinking wasnt a sin - it was a part of the European art of gastronomique.
Unfortunately, she had no impact on the South - it's still a sin to imbibe in many places here!

Also in the east! We were in Rockport, Massachusetts and you couldn't order a drink without also ordering food. Wine is a food group! :)
